A book about the work of Birger Kaipiainen’s (1915–1988).

Birger Kaipiainen presents the work of one of Finland’s most imaginative ceramic artists. Kaipiainen joined the Arabia art department in 1937, straight after his studies, and spent almost his entire career there, apart from four years at Rörstrand in Sweden in the 1950s, where he had his international breakthrough. Unlike most of his colleagues, he focused almost entirely on unique art pieces, creating dreamlike worlds of flowers, birds and figures in rich colours and glazes. His famous pansy plates, bead birds and the beloved Paratiisi tableware reflect his belief that imagination has no limits. Published for the major retrospective shown at Retretti in 1989 and at the Museum of Applied Arts in Helsinki in 1990, the catalogue offers a beautiful overview of his life’s work.
