Eero Aarnio – Designer of Colour and Joy
Eero Aarnio – Designer of Colour and Joy
Eero Aarnio’s (b. 1932) monograph Eero Aarnio – Designer of Colour and Joy is a richly illustrated celebration of the life and work of the legendary Finnish pop designer. Aarnio, who studied interior architecture at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, rose to international fame in the 1960s with his Ball Chair, followed by bold and colourful classics such as the Pastil, Bubble, Pony, Puppy and Tomato. His experimental approach liberates form, combining the properties of materials with his boundless imagination, and his works are held in major collections including MoMA, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Vitra Design Museum. Made in collaboration with Design Museum Helsinki for its 2016 retrospective of Aarnio’s 50-year career, the book includes previously unpublished drawings and photographs from his archives. The playful graphic design by the Finnish agency Bond uses fluorescent colours, die-cut pages and bold typography that echo the spirit of Aarnio’s work.
