Jörn Donner’s (1933–2020) photobook Matkalla – På resa – Travelling 1951–1968
Jörn Donner’s (1933–2020) photobook Matkalla – På resa – Travelling 1951–1968 presents a remarkable collection of travel photographs taken during nearly two decades of journeys around the world. Donner, the Finnish writer, film director and producer best known internationally for Ingmar Bergman’s Oscar-winning Fanny and Alexander, travelled constantly throughout his life, and his camera went with him. His large photographic archive, whose high quality was only discovered after his death, captures everyday life from Europe and Asia to Egypt and South Africa. Beyond his public image as an uncompromising and controversial figure, these pictures reveal a man with a curious, insatiable and deeply human gaze. The book accompanied the exhibition Jörn Donner – Travelling 1951–68 at Villa Hakasalmi in Helsinki.
