American-born Howard Smith is a versatile artist and graphic designer whose career has spanned both Finland and the United States. Working across a wide range of media—including paper, fabric, metal, ceramics, wood and enamel—Smith has developed a distinctive artistic practice that embraces experimentation, materiality and graphic form.

Smith studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. He lived and worked in Finland from 1962 to 1976, before returning to the United States, where he taught art at universities in California from 1976 to 1984 while maintaining his own studio near Los Angeles.

In 1985, Smith returned to Finland and worked as a guest artist at Oy Arabia Ab from 1985 to 1987. In 1988, he founded Studio Arteoks in Tervakoski together with ceramic artist Erna Aältonen.

Smith's works are represented in museums and collections including: Museum of Modern Art, New York,Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. Museum of African American Art, Los Angeles, Palace of Fine Arts, Mexico City, Museum of Art and Design, Helsinki . etc
